Your Personal Scam Recovery & Protection Plan

You’re not alone. This is your step-by-step guide to safety, recovery, and peace of mind.
You were targeted by a criminal — not fooled. Taking action now protects you and helps stop them.

Stop Further Harm

  • Block the scammer — phone, email, apps, social media. Done? You’re in control.
  • Remove remote access tools (AnyDesk, TeamViewer, etc.) — uninstall now.
  • Change passwords + turn on 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) everywhere.
  • Run a full antivirus scan (use Malwarebytes or Windows Defender).
Goal: Cut off the scammer’s access — you’re locking the door.

Secure Your Money & Identity

  • Freeze your credit — call or go online: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion.
  • Stop all payments — wires, Zelle, gift cards, crypto. Contact your bank now.
  • Pull free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Report It — Help Stop the Scammers

  • File with FTC: reportfraud.ftc.gov
  • File with FBI IC3: ic3.gov
  • Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM)
  • Call local police (non-emergency) — get a report number
  • If 60+: Call Elder Fraud Hotline: 833-372-8311
  • Save everything: screenshots, emails, receipts, chat logs
  • Use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan + affidavit
  • Your report helps catch criminals — you’re fighting back

Heal Emotionally

  • Talk to someone — friend, family, or support group
  • Join a scam survivor group: AARP, Cyber Seniors, or local meetups
  • Know the signs of trauma — sleep, guilt, isolation are normal. You’re not weak.
  • Consider counseling — many offer free scam victim sessions
You’re not “gullible” — scammers are professionals. Healing takes time.

Stay Safe Going Forward

  • Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password)
  • Enable transaction alerts on all accounts
  • Never click links in unexpected texts/emails
  • Verify any “urgent” request by calling back on a known number
Small habits = big protection. You’ve got this.
